  1. Write a list and stick to it. Before you shop, take time to make a list of what you need and then make sure you stick to it. Resist these enticements with your list.

  5. Think about alternative items. Before you buy something, see if there is a less expensive, alternative item available. You might consider a cheaper model of the item or even buying the item used. The Internet is a great source for second-hand goods, as are the classifieds in your local paper.
     
  6. Don't rush in. Don't rush into any significant purchases. Take time to leave the store and think about it; perhaps even sleep on it. Never buy under pressure.
